| Prospective Students > If you are in Middle School or High School...
I'm interested in UF/IFAS Apopka.....Here's what you need to know:
It is never too early to start thinking about college. Work closely with your school counselor to select courses that will prepare you to attend a local community college and transfer to UF. The majors in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences are grounded in science and math. It is very important that you take as much science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) and math (Algebra, Trigonometry, and Pre Calculus) while still in high school. This will also allow you to get into the proper science and math courses at the community college.
You may begin your academic career by completing an Associate in Arts (AA) program (preferably in Agriculture or Science related field). The AA degree provides courses equivalent to those offered to freshman and sophomore students on the Gainesville campus of the University of Florida.
When selecting courses at the community college, you should work closely with your academic advisor and select courses to meet the specific admission requirements of the Environmental Horticulture Department. Please reference the CALS Transfer Guide for major pre-requisites and community college course equivalencies. If you would like a checklist of what the requirements are for the Environmental Horticulture Landscape and Nursery Management Program then click here . UF/IFAS Apopka campus partners with Florida public community colleges to provide a 2+2 education. Specifically, these partnerships allow students to obtain their first two years (AA) from the local community college then complete their baccalaureate and/or graduate degree through UF/IFAS Apopka. This collaboration allows students to obtain a 4 year degree, as well as a graduate degree, without leaving their community.
Upon acceptance into the University of Florida, you will be able to complete the junior and senior year courses for a baccalaureate degree. All Environmental Horticulture courses, during the junior and senior years, will be taught by UF Faculty at Apopka and statewide. The Bachelor of Science Degree will be awarded by the University of Florida upon completion of all requirements.
