The Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC), part of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida, is located in Apopka just outside of Orlando and serves the students of mid-Florida.
If you’re looking to study in an applied science, rather than a general biology or chemistry degree, we have the right program for you. MREC offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in horticultural sciences. This is an exciting field for anyone looking to work in the office and outdoors. We differ from other science degrees, like those offered at the nearby University of Central Florida (UCF), in that our program focuses on a specific science discipline rather than a broad, general area. This allows our students to develop specific skills necessary for success in their careers. This is accomplished in part by utilizing hands-on teaching within our coursework so that our graduates can be highly competitive in the job market. Our program offers small classroom sizes with outstanding faculty/student ratios that allow for the development of one-on-one relationships with research and teaching faculty. In addition, our classes are generally offered during non-work hours to accommodate our students’ busy schedules. A mixture of live and distance education instruction is used to provide diverse class options to students.
