FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANT AWARD (Sabbatical):
Italy (May 1991 to January 1992)
Availed faculty development grant by the University of Florida to conduct research in Italy. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Venice, Department of Public Health, U.L.S.S. 16, Venice, and Department of Parasitology, Istituto Superiore Di Sanita, Rome. The main thrust of research in Italy was on the ecology and control of Chironomus salinarius midge in the lagoon of Venice. Studies were also conducted on the extraction of allergens from larval and adult midges and performing RAST-ELISA to determine hypersensitivity in individuals to native midge species and to evidence any cross-reactivity in these individuals to foreign (Florida) midge species. Detection of the radionuclide, Cs-137, in sediments and in C. salinarius larvae in the lagoon was documented. At the Istituto Superiore Di Sanita, Rome, cooperative research was conducted on the genetics of insecticidal resistance in Culex pipiens mosquito populations in Italy, and the application of recombinant DNA technology for detection of the malarial parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.
Italy (May to November 2002)
Availed faculty development grant by the University of Florida to conduct research on chironomid midges and mosquitoes in Italy.
